Dog Was ‘Waiting for Someone, Anyone, to Show Him Kindness’

On a frigid January morning, the Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) team embarked on their first rescue mission of the year—one that would leave a lasting impact. The biting winds mirrored the urgency of their task as they approached a heartbreaking scene: a malnourished dog huddled against a house’s foundation, seeking shelter from the bitter cold. His thin frame spoke of neglect, but his eyes held a flicker of hope as the team drew closer.

“He was just waiting for someone … anyone … to show him kindness and help,” SRSL shared on Facebook. Donna Lochmann, the chief life-saving officer, approached the pup with gentle words of reassurance. Though wary at first, the dog quickly sensed their good intentions. When they reached him, he leaned into their arms, as if silently saying, “Thank you.”

The rescuers were deeply moved by his immediate trust and sweetness despite his struggles. “As soon as we walked up to him, he came to us, so grateful someone finally stopped to help,” they said. Weighing just 32 pounds—half the weight he should have been—the dog, later named Nico New Beginnings (or simply Nico), was dangerously underweight but otherwise healthy. His recovery would require careful feeding to restore his strength.

Transporting Nico was unexpectedly easy. Unlike most rescues, where coaxing with a leash is necessary, Nico needed none. “We didn’t even need a leash,” SRSL shared. “He let us pick him up and place him right in the rescue Jeep.”

At the SRSL shelter, Nico immediately won over the team with his affectionate nature. “If you open his doors, he bolts into your arms like lightning,” SRSL said. “He just can’t get close enough to us.”

Nico’s journey to recovery truly began when he moved into a loving foster home. There, he started gaining weight and revealing his playful, puppy-like personality. His foster mom reports that Nico’s favorite pastime is giving kisses—a reflection of his newfound joy.

Today, Nico enjoys cozy sweaters, warm cuddles, and the security of his foster home. SRSL is eager to find him a forever family once he’s fully healed, but for now, they’re delighted to see him thriving.

“This is one special boy,” SRSL wrote. Nico’s transformation from despair to joy highlights the incredible power of compassion and care. Since the publication of his story, Nico has been removed from the adoption listings—a sure sign he’s found his forever family.

Here’s to a bright future, Nico! Please share his story to inspire others with his tale of hope and love.
